Join PASA Sustainable Agriculture for our second seasonal tour of Pennypack Farm & Education Center in Montgomery County, PA, to learn about their strategies for season extension and winter cover cropping.
Learning from Pennypack’s experience growing for a 180-member, 14-week CSA share, we’ll cover how to manage winter crops through topics such as low tunnel and high tunnel production, planting and harvest schedules, root vegetable production and storage, winter greens production, soil health, variety selection, row covers, and more.
Founded in 2003 and co-managed by Kirstie and Steph Jones, Pennypack Farm & Education Center is a 13-acre diversified vegetable farm that uses organic practices to grow for a CSA and food donation program. One of the primary components of Pennypack’s soil health program is the use of cover crops during all four seasons to build soil structure, prevent erosion, and manage weeds.
Kirstie and Steph will share their experience with the Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS)’s Conservation Stewardship Program (CSP), which supports their farm in developing diverse cover crop mixes to meet their sustainability and soil health goals.
Stick around after the workshop to connect with other attendees and enjoy some local (hot or cold) apple cider and apple cider donuts.
